A few of my friends were working on a commercial for the Doritos Crash The Super Bowl Contest. I thought I would go and hang out to give them a little moral support and it turns out they wanted me to be an extra. So, I got to have a whopping 1.4 seconds in the commercial! Sometimes I question whether spending money on gear is really worth it. But, sometimes it really pays off… not literally but psychologically. Maybe one day it will pay off literally! I got the Denon DN-S3000s (CDJs) fixed today and did a quick little mini house mix. Enjoy!

Edirol PCR M80 MIDI Controller refurb update

Well, I got all of the keys back on and it looks freakin’ sick!!!!

Buuuuuut… unfortunately refurbished doesn’t hold true to this piece of electronic gear. Some of the keys still aren’t making contact and sending the midi signals I need! I’m sure if I put some more time and effort it into it, it could be fixed. But, at this point, I don’t feel like investing much more time into it. I’ve got at least 10 hours invested into this project. So, it looks like I got myself a nice looking dust catcher conversation piece. I suppose I learned a lot by taking it apart. It does give me an excuse to shop for a new midi controller though! An Akai MPK is looking pretty tasty right now.

Refurbishing my Edirol midi controller

So, I’ve decided to refurbish my Edirol PCR-M80 midi controller. I’ve had it for about 5 years and some of the keys just flat out stopped working. At first I thought I was going to be able to clean the connections with air duster and everything would be dandy. After realizing that I couldn’t hit the midi sensors with the air duster, I removed the keys. After getting to that point I realized all of the sensors for the keys were covered with a rubber piece. At this point, I figured, what the heck? Maybe I can make a Frankenstein midi controller if all else fails. Half the keys don’t work anyways. I had just seen a documentary on the evolution and history of electronic music in Britain and I have to say it may have motivated and inspired me a little bit.

After cleaning all of the sensors with rubbing alcohol and testing the midi signals to Midi Ox to make sure they work, I’m feeling uber nerdy now. I had all of the keys off so I began to think about what else I could do. And then I began to think, “Why don’t people have colored keys on their keyboards?”. I have seen a Korg Poly 800 with reverse colored keys but nothing too extreme or flashy. I had recently gave my JBL monitors a custom paint job so I was up for the challenge and I decided on red to match my newly refurbed JBL monitors. After sanding all the major white keys down (so the paint would adhere) and spraying them down with enamel, here’s what I got…

They look pretty slick and shiny so far! I wish the paint would dry quicker but I don’t want to mess anything up at this point. I just hope that once I get it back together after doing all of this hard work, it works!! Hopefully I’ll be updating soon to show you my working refurbed midi controller with shiny red keys!

Limousine pub crawl in downtown San Diego

Shot on a Mini HD Flip, I edited this video together real quick in Adobe Premiere CS4 to show the epic night with the fellas and our limousine pub crawl in downtown San Diego. The HD Flip is pretty good quality but doesn’t have the best controls for lighting and sound. But… that’s consumer electronics for ya! It’s still a fun and convenient little high definition video camera that fits nicely in your pockets. But, yes, we were a wild bunch that night.
